Icelandic Crochet Cardigan
This is a fun and easy to make crocheted cardigan. It’s worked in the lovely V- stitch, which is one of my favourite stitches since it’s so comfy to work and quick too!
There’s also a full FREE tutorial for the smallest size cardigan over on my YouTube channel:

I’ve made countless of these, the first one for my younger son when he was a newborn back in 2010, so this pattern truly brings back so many beautiful memories. And now I’ve made a set for my niece and nephew too. My wish is that your tiny little Icelandic Crochet cardigans will play part in the memories you create with the children in your lives.
Yarn
You can make this baby cardi with any fingering weight yarn for sizes newborn to 2 year olds.
I used Baby wool from Icewear Garn (100% wool, 175 m = 50 g).
Main colour: 2 (3) 3 (4) skeins
Pattern colour: 1 skein for all sizehttps://www.ravelry.com/images/assets/icons/bold.svg?v=2s, if you use more than 1 colour you can use scraps for the pattern like I did!
Hook
No 3 mm and 2.5 mm for the bands
Gauge
14 rows & 20 ST in V-stitch = 10 cm
Using a 3 mm hook
Sizes
The pattern comes in 4 pre-determined sizes:
0-6 months old (6-12 months old) 12-18 months old, (2 years old)
Total width of body:
approx. 48 (52) 56 (60) cm wide
Length of body up to underarm: approx. 15 (18) 21 (24) cm long
Length of sleeves up to underarm: approx15 (18) 21 (24) cm long
Different yarn & sizes
Note that you can easily follow the pre-determined sizes but use thicker yarn to get bigger sizes. I’ve made a kid versio for sizes 3-10 year old, using DK yarn, following are the yarn stats for that version.
Hooks
No 4 mm for the body
No 3.5 mm for the bands
Gauge
11 rows & 14 ST in V-stitch = 10 cm
Using DK yarn and a 4 mm hook
Yarn
You can make this kid cardi with any DK weight yarn for sizes 3-10 year olds.
I used Saga wool from Icewear Garn (100% wool, 100 m = 50 g).
Main colour: 5 (6) 7 (8) skeins
1 extra skein for the bands and necklining, I used the turquoise.
Pattern colour: 1 skein each pattern color for all sizes, you can also use scraps for the pattern like I did!
For my kiddie Icelandic Crochet Cardigan depicted here I used the following colors:
Main color white no. 1000
Pattern colors: turquoise no. 4119, light brown no. 9115 and dark brown 9059.
Sizes
The pattern comes in 4 pre-determined sizes when using DK:
3-4 year old (5-6 year old) 7-8 year old, (10 years old)
Total width body:
approx. 54 (60) 66 (72) cm wide
Length of body up to underarm: approx. 26 (30) 34 (38) cm long
Length of sleeves up to underarm, without the extra cuffs: approx. 26 (30) 34 (38) cm long
The extra long cuffs then add 6 cm to the sleeves.
Abbreviations (US terms)
ST = stitch/stitches
CH = chain stitch
SS = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
DC SP = double crochet space, the space between two DCs that stand side by side.
DC 2tog = decrease where you work two double crochet stitches together.
V = since we are working the V-stitch, one V is where you work 2 DCs into the same space, so that they look like a V. Also known as a 2 DC cluster, see chart at the bottom of this page.
General instructions
The cardigan is worked from the bottom up. The sleeves are worked whole in rounds. The body is worked back and forth in rows. Then you join the body and sleeves and continue working the cardigan back and forth in rows, doing decreases in the yoke and up to the neck lining.
I will be uploading a full video tutorial for this one on my YouTube channel next week, where I show you how to do the smallest size from start to finish!
