This pattern is for a sweet blanket reminiscent of cupcakes, hence its ‘ Icing on the Cake’ name!

The design includes a variety of stitches, including shells, and bobble stiches made on a contrasting colour background. The pattern creates pretty colourful stripes, making a fun and eye-catching blanket.

The instructions are for a baby blanket size (approx. 69 x 83 cm / 27 x 32.5 inches) but I have included the formula you will need for increasing your foundation chain if you would like to make a wider blanket.

18 sts and 19 rows = 10cm measured over double crochet (UK terms) using a 4 mm hook

Tension is not critical for this project but will affect the finished size of the blanket and how much yarn is used.

This pattern is written in both UK and US terms. If you purchase the pattern you will receive 2 digital files - just choose the version you prefer and download it.

You will need DK weight yarn in 5 colours, x1 100g skein of each. You will need less than 100g for each colour.

For my blanket I used Hayfield Bonus DK yarn by Sirdar in shades:
Lagoon (645) Yarn A
Deep Rose (616) Yarn B
Bluebell (969) Yarn C
Violet (669) Yarn D
Primrose (957) Yarn E

Pattern includes:

  • detailed written instructions on how to make your blanket
  • colour layout chart to assist you
  • photo tutorial which demonstrates how to make the contrasting bobble stitches.
