This long, striped tubular scarf is worked in the round using the helical knitting technique, creating smooth bands of color that spiral gently through the fabric without the jog that normally appears when working stripes in the round. The finished exterior of the scarf features reverse stockinette stitch, allowing the pattern in the fabric to show clearly as uninterrupted spirals that look like stripes.
The scarf can be worn long and relaxed or wrapped twice around the neck and styled as a cowl by tucking one end into the other. The tubular construction hides the wrong side of the fabric inside the tube, creating a polished finish and a soft, comfortable piece that sits neatly against the neck.
This project is knit in the round and requires familiarity with the German Twisted Cast-On, helical knitting, Russian Bind-Off, and simple finishing techniques, all worked on circular needles.
