Indian Corn Hat
An unusually colorful ear of Indian corn inspired a dye pot. The yarn turned out to be as beautiful as that ear of corn, then one thing led to another… and the yarn dyed in Indian corn colors became a hat and a scarf, patterned like corn kernels.
SIZES:
Child (Adult).
YARN
About 200 yards (183 m) [less for child’s size] of worsted-weight yarn in corn colors, plus about 20 yards (19 m) of sport-weight or fingering-weight yarn in a light color for husk tassel (or use sport-weight yarn in two colors to achieve a corn-color combination and work hat using yarn doubled).
The sample is knit with Morehouse Merino 3-Strand in Prosperity Corn Color, 2 skeins.
Lace-weight yarn is used for [tassel], 1 skein.
The husk-colored … tassel complement[s] the warm colors of the yarn.
NEEDLES
Size 5 or 6 (3.75 or 4 mm): 16” (40.5 cm) circular needle; set of double-pointed needles same size, or size to obtain correct gauge. You can also work entire hat using double-pointed needles.
OTHER MATERIALS
Stitch marker; tapestry needle.
GAUGE
20 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) in seed stitch pattern.
