Inflorescence beanie
This kind of colourwork is very addictive, and I really wanted to integrate this technique into a smaller design piece. Colourwork beanies can be contemporary and stylish, right?
Inflorescence beanie is worked bottom up seamless in the round and features double layered hem with colourwork pattern on the right side and simple ribbing on the inner side. The body of the beanie is worked in the main yarn held double with a textured cable pattern. The crown is pointed and can accommodate a tiny pompom in contrasting colour.
Sizes
The pattern is written for three sizes 1 (2, 3) to fit 48 (54, 60) cm /18.9 (21.3, 23.6) in head circumference with 2 extra intermediate sizes available upon gauge adjustment (see notes in Gauge section). For the finished measurements, please refer to the graph on Page 2. The sample is shown in size 2. More about fit in the Gauge section.
Yarn
Main colour: ca. 45 (55, 65) g of Darnie from Studio Donegal, 100% merino wool with 410 m (448 yds) in 100 g, shown in shade 8805 (garnet); with estimated yardage of 185 (226, 267) m /202 (247, 291) yds;
Contrasting colour: ca. 8 (10, 15) g of Soft Donegal Tweed from Studio Donegal, 100% merino wool with 190 m (210 yds) in 100 g, shown in shade 8805 (oatmeal); with estimated yardage of 15 (19, 29) m / 17 (21, 31) yds.
Or any other similar yarn(s) to match the gauge. Note, I recommend to use a heavier cc yarn to have more texture in the colourwork; choose the yarn that felts well for the floats to look their best.
Needles and notions
A pair of 3.0 mm (US 2.5-3) and 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needles with 40-60 cm (16-24 in) cables or a pair of interchangeable needles; 1 stitch marker; a tapestry needle or crochet hook to weave in the ends; cable needle (if necessary).
Gauge
20 sts & 26 rows in 10 cm (4 in) measured over the colourwork worked in the round after blocking on 3.0 mm (US 2.5-3) needles;
20 sts & 40 rows in 10 cm (4 in) measured over 1x1 ribbing worked in the round after blocking on 3.0 mm (US 2.5-3) needles (stretched);
24 sts & 26 rows in 10 cm (4 in) measured over the cable pattern worked in the round after blocking on 4.0 mm (US 6) needles.
To achieve intermediate sizes, take needles half a size bigger than recommended, i.e., 3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.5 mm (US 7) and follow the instructions for the size 1 if looking for 50-52 cm (19.7-20.5 in) or 56-58 cm (22-22.8 in) head circumference.
Note, because of the colourwork consisting mostly of floats, the finished fabric is not stretchy. Make sure to not work the colourwork too tight, if necessary, use a bigger size needle to obtain the gauge. The finished hat has little to no ease, so please choose the size carefully.
