Inverness Tam
Raspberry Beret meets Outlander in this Highland tam! The cable band of this tam is cast on using the provisional cast-on technique and knitted flat. The ends are then grafted seamlessly using Kitchener’s stitch. With the yarn ball still attached, stitches are picked up along the side edge of the cable band and joined to work in the round. Once the crown is finished, stitches are picked up along the second side edge of the cable band, and two rounds of ribbing give a nice finished edge. As a final detail, a quick I-cord loop tab is sewn into place at the center crown. The tam is then blocked over a flat dish or pie plate for the proper shape.

This pattern includes three sizes: child (19” head circumference), adult small (21” head circumference), adult medium (23” head circumference).
The gauge is 17 stitches and 24 rows over 4” in stockinette stitch.
This pattern is recommended for intermediate knitters. You must be able to make basic cables as well as decrease and increase stitches.
For the deep red tweed version, I used Knit Picks City Tweed Aran/HW, 55% Merino wool, 25% superfine alpaca, 20% Donegal tweed, Aran weight yarn. You will need 1 (1, 2) balls of Blue Blood #24529. For the brighter red version, I used Lett Lopi, 100% Icelandic wool. You will need 2 balls of Burnt Red #9414. You will also need 16” circular needles and double pointed needles in size US 8 or whatever size necessary to obtain the gauge.
This pattern includes full written instructions as well as a full chart, so that you may choose according to your preference. It also includes notes on provisional cast on, Kitchener’s stitch, and I-Cord techniques.
