Description: This full-circular capelet pays homage to the geometry of gears. Named after the curve that forms the contact edge of gear teeth, its lower edging consists of twenty-four teeth. The square neckline represents a gear’s square axle opening. Four “spokes” are separated by lace Panels suggestive of rotational motion. Garter ridges and eyelets provide texture and laciness, but with an industrial feel. Even the color is reminiscent of antique brass. Whether you wear Involute as part of an entire steampunk ensemble or over T-shirt and jeans, your gear will turn heads.

Skill level: Challenging due to the unusual construction. Worked side-to-side (in rows between hem and neck) clockwise in a single piece, the circular shape is created using a multitude of short rows (even the lace insets are curved!). During the “spoke” (lace) portions, three differently-patterned panels separated by markers are worked at the same time. Cast-on row is kitchener-stitched to the last row to complete the circle. A square yoke is picked up and knitted on after the main body is complete. Previous experience with wrapped short rows is recommended. Additional techniques: basic lace (right side patterning only); crochet cast on; kitchener stitch.

Lace pattern is both written out and charted.
