Ireland Aran Pullover with Saddle Shoulders
Pattern includes a visual plan, planning worksheets and step-by-step project sheet to be used to create your personalized pullover.
Yarn: A smooth, dense yarn will show off the cable patterns best. Tightly spun yarns make the cable patterns pop out from the background, while softly spun yarns result in softer cable definition and a fabric that retains drape.
Aran weight yarn is frequently chosen for an Aran sweater, but any weight and fiber of yarn will work. For practice I suggest a medium-weight yarn and US size 7 or 8 (4.5 or 5 mm) knitting needles.
Yardage guidelines for various sizes and yarn weights are included in the book on page 20-22. Increase the estimates by about 30 percent for a densely cabled sweater.
Knitting needles: size appropriate for chosen yarn:
Straight or circular needle(s) for body and sleeves; because you will work back and forth, the length of the circular needle is not critical.
Two sizes smaller than primary needles:
Straight or circular needle(s) for ribbings.
Circular needle(s) for neckband: 16 inches (40 cm) long.
Additional instructions and needle selecting tips included if you prefer to knit your Aran sweater in the round.
Additional supplies: stitch markers.
