Iris Shawl
This circular shawl is knit from the center out using a variation on Elizabeth Zimmerman’s “Pi Shawl” geometry. Four distinct lace motifs combine into a beautiful whole, ending with a slight ruffle and picot edge. It’s knit in naturally dyed Swans Island fingering weight merino, which is an absolute joy to work with.
Gauge: 22 sts = 4” (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch.
Finished Measurements: A circular shawl 36” across.
Yarn: Swans Island Merino Fingering (Certified Organic Merino Wool; 525 yd/100g) 1½ skeins Indigo.
Needles: US 6 (4 mm) circular needles at least 24” (60 cm) in length; one set of double pointed needles, also size 6 (4 mm) for starting blanket. If you prefer to begin by the magic loop method, you will not need the dpns.
Skills Required: Increasing by the yarn-over method, multiple methods of decreasing, and knitting from the center out. A center-out cast-on method is recommended.
