Do you have odd bits of leftover yarn and don’t know what to do with them? The Isidia Beanie is the perfect project to use up your yarn stack. Using only one strand of yarn at one time, the beanie will knit up quickly, combining three different colours of yarn with a simple slip-stitch pattern.

Isidia is a term for vegetative reproduction of lichen: stalked, branched or unbranched outgrows formed on the thallus (plant body) surface. With the gorgeous yellow colour of lichen in mind, the beanie with its interweaving pattern reflects beautifully the colours of Scotland’s’ landscape.

Finished measurements: Beanie circumference (unstretched): 60cm (20 ½ in); length from brim to crown: 26cm (10in)

Yarn: DK yarn

Materials used: Leftover of 3 skeins of Iolair Yarn Easdale (70% Baby Alpaca, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere; 225m (246yds)/ 100g); shown in colour wulfenite, howlite and hematite. 78g of yarn was used in total for the beanie.

Gauge: 18 stitches and 28 rows = 10cm/ 4in in pattern stitch, unblocked

Needles: Gauge-size circular needle; gauge-size needle of your preferred type to knit the crown with
For reference: A 4mm/ US 6 size circular needle (40cm/16in) length) was used for main beanie and 4mm/ US 6 size double pointed needles were used to knit the crown.

Construction notes: The beanie is knitted in the round by combining slip stitches with three different colours of yarn.
