Island Trail Shawl
An asymmetrical triangular shawl, knit side to side, on the bias.
This shawl is a lot of fun to knit! It’s a great stash buster if you use leftover yarns like I did. You can use as many colors as you want (I used seven). Only two colors are used at a time; as you run out of one color, just pick up the next and the colors just “fade” into each other. The unique stitch pattern creates a reversible shawl that looks like each side is a different color. Just gather up your fingering weight yarns and have fun.
I have added additional instructions for making a 2 color version using two, 100g skeins, of fingering weight yarn.
A complete list of abbreviations and a stitch glossary explaining the techniques used in the project are included.
Skill level: advanced beginner if you don’t work the “trail”, otherwise, intermediate. Techniques: knit (no purling), YO, Kfb, K2tog, K1b (knit 1 below).
Yarn I used I used fingering weight yarns left over from previous projects; all but one were MADELINE TOSH MERINO LIGHT (100% merino; 420yds). I have listed the colors as I see them (not the yarn company names as I could not find them all!). The idea is not to copy what I did, but to create your own “design”. I am giving you the amounts I used as a guideline. Color 1 (A), purple, 12g Color 2 (B), gold/grey, 18g Color 3 (A), gold/green, 46g Color 4 (B), blue/purple, 43g Color 5 (A), light blue, 62g Color 6 (B), orange, 80g Color 7 (A), magenta, 65g Total – 326g, approximately 1,300 yards/1189 meters
Yarn Selection: Any combination of fingering weight yarns. You can use any number of colors and any amounts of each. I used approximately 326g total, but you can use less or more and have a smaller or larger shawl. This is really more of a recipe, so feel free to experiment and make it your own.
Approximate finished size: 74in/188cm wide, 26in/66cm deep, using approximately 326g or 1,300yds/1189 meters of fingering weight yarn.
The size can be adjusted by using less or more yarn.
