It Took a Village
This large and voluptuous shawl combines standard double-knitting
with marled moss-stitch accents, to create texture and visual interest.
Its unusual stepped, crenellated edges are entirely made by casting
on new pairs of stitches, wherever the pattern needs extra blocks at its edges, meaning that there are absolutely no increases in this shawl whatsoever! (There are no decreases in it either, for that matter…!)
Using two contrasting colours of yarn, and “marling” some stitches by working with both of them held together at specific points, creates the illusion of a third colour, inhabiting the colourspace somewhere between the two main colours, adding even more depth to the overall look of the piece.
The generous proportions of this shawl, and the deliberately dense
gauge of the fabric, make it extra specially warm and cosy, and even though there is a lot of shawl here, it still feels deliciously light, with wonderful drape.
Its shape and size make it perfect not only for a glorious shawl, but
also as a comfortable lap blanket, for snuggling under on those really cold telly days.
I absolutely LOVED working on this shawl: it has just the right balance between interesting and simple, and once the pattern has been established, it’s super easy to see at a glance where you are in the pattern, due to the regularity and geometric nature of the design.
PLEASE NOTE: The listed yarn for this pattern is now discontinued, but any 4-ply/fingering-weight yarn of a similar length per weight should make a suitable substitution.
