Since moving to western Washington eight years ago, my family and I have been fascinated by the diverse geological features of the region - we’ve gone digging at Stonerose Fossil Site; hiked at Mt. St. Helens; explored the bluffs at Ebey’s Landing; and tried the tsunami safety trail in Newport, Oregon.

Those geological features are a little difficult to interpret through crochet, however. When developing this year’s PNW Slow Crawl crochet pattern, I thought of the many illustrations I’ve seen in interpretive panels through our journeys - especially the ones that show how the Cascadia Subduction Zone works. As I played around with the simple cables in this design, it reminded me of the images showing one tectonic plate diving below another at fault lines… hence the pattern name.

Difficulty Level: Appropriate for a confident beginner

Size: At gauge, mitts will fit an adult with a hand circumference of approximately 7.5 inches / 19 cm. This is approximately an adult medium. By using a slightly heavier yarn and slightly larger needle, you can achieve an adult large or extra-large size; by using the same yarn and a smaller hook - or reducing the number of rows worked after the cables - you can achieve a child’s large / teen size or an adult small.

Yarn: Ella Rae Rustic Lace (310 yards 283 meters / 50g, 75% wool/25% silk)

Hook: US D/3.25 mm or size needed to get gauge

Gauge: 21.5 single crochet sts = 4” / 10 cm using a US D / 3.25mm hook after washing/blocking
