The gauge listed above is for the bulky version; there is also an aran weight version, and a stranded colorwork variation for aran weight.

You’ll Need

  • approx 160 yards / 145 meters bulky weight yarn
  • or approx 150{175} yards / 140{160} meters aran weight yarn for smaller{larger} sizes
  • or, for stranded colorwork variation, approx 100{115} yards / 90{105} meters aran weight yarn in each of two contrasting colors
  • size US 10.5 (6.5mm) needles for bulky weight, size US 9 (5.5mm) for aran weight, or size to get desired gauge, in your choice of needle type(s) to work in the round around a hat circumference and around a smaller circumference
  • a cable needle

For any version, solid or semi-solid colorways are highly recommended. Yardage may vary as size/gauge varies.

Standard bulky weight gauges (blocked):
stockinette: 11.5 sts, 19 rows per 4 inches / 10 cm
cable pattern: 20 sts, 19 rows per 4 inches / 10 cm

Standard aran weight gauges (blocked):
stockinette: 15 sts, 22 rows per 4 inches / 10 cm
cable pattern: 25 sts, 22 rows per 4 inches / 10 cm

There are only two circumference size options; if you want to adjust your size more precisely, adjust your gauge slightly, bigger or smaller as you want.

Circumference for the larger sizes (either weight) is approx 21 inches / 53 cm lying flat, fitting a 22 inch / 56 cm head size loosely, stretching to snugly fit a head up to around 24 inches / 61 cm.

Circumference for the smaller size (aran weight only) is approx 17 inches / 43 cm lying flat, fitting an 18 inch / 46 cm head size loosely, stretching to fit a head up to around 20 inches / 51 cm.

bulky weight height: approx 10 inches / 25 cm
aran weight height: approx 9 inches / 23 cm

The pattern is entirely written and charted. The stranded colorwork variation is charted.
