Inspired by the practicality of Jane Eyre, this square shawl can easily be customized for different uses: knit in worsted-weight yarn on size 10½ needles, it would be a wonderful, big throw
(and eat up a metric ton of your stash!); in fingering-weight superwash on size 5 needles, it would be a lovely, special baby gift. Want it smaller? Cut the “Ferns” section in half.
Bigger? Expand the center diamond section or the trinity stitch section. Want it fancier? Toss out the picot bind-off and instead knit on some gorgeous lace edging. Hey, if you want, go all out and use laceweight and size 4 needles, expand every section, and add a fancy edging! Jane was an artist; she would have appreciated your creative adaptation of the pattern!

Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light 50% wool, 50% alpaca; 144 yds/131m per 50g skein; 14 WPI, 10 skeins #4207 Salt &
Pepper (Model uses 9 skeins, but if you knit tightly, it would be best to get an extra skein, just to play it safe.)

Set of five US 7 4.5mm double pointed needles
US 7 4.5mm circular needle, 24in 60cm long

4 locking stitch markers, one a different color from the other three to serve as beg-of-rnd marker
