The double-layered hat is designed to match the Janina Maria Scarf created to celebrate the inaugural Woolly Good Gathering at Summerhall, previously The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh.

Use leftovers from the hat to make a smaller striped version of the scarf, or use additional skeins for a single colour version.

The set is named after Janina Maria Sokolowska (1914–1994) who was the first woman to qualify as a Veterinary Surgeon in 1945 from The Royal Dick.

Janina Maria Hat is worked from the top down in continuous spiral rounds.

At the colour change to MC, the hat is ‘flipped’ to work on the WS to set up the folded band and create a smooth fabric against the forehead. The folded band is then secured before you crochet a lace overlay. With careful weaving in of ends this hat becomes reversible.

Enjoy playing with colour contrasts between the base ‘beanie’ and lace overlay.

Janina Maria is a generous, asymmetrical scarf worked sideways in offset crochet clusters using up to two skeins, but it can also be adapted to a smaller scarf using one skein only. You may like to stripe the scarf, especially to match the Janina Maria Hat, so the set can be made in just two skeins.

Measurements can be adjusted by working fewer or more repeats, please note that any size adjustments will affect the yarn quantities required.
