Janus
My mother likes to appropriate hand knit items, such as shawls and socks. I don’t mind making things for her, as she does appreciate them. She has an unfortunate habit of wearing shawls wrong side out. This shawl is designed to be completely reversible, courtesy of garter stitch and ribbing.
The name comes from Roman mythology. Janus is the god of beginnings and endings and is often pictured with 2 faces.
The body of the shawl is worked in garter stitch, the cable in ribbing, and the border in garter stitch. There are double yarnovers in the border.
Size & shape
Final size of the shawl is dependent on the yardage of the yarn used and gauge.
Two shape variations are included within the pattern. Variation 1 is an asymmetrical triangle with the cable and lace border along one side. Variation 2 is a more elongated triangle, with the border along the two slanted sides.
Yarn
Janus is designed to use one skein of sock yarn (fingering weight). The shawl can be made in other weights of yarn, with the needle size changed as appropriate.
Needles
US 6 or 7 (4 or 4.5mm) is recommended. Use a needle size that will result in the desired fabric.
Gauge
Gauge is not relevant. The shawl is worked by weight. Use a needle size that will result in a fabric you like.
