Joanna Lymstock Shawl
The perfect lightweight shawlette for a summer’s picnic or that special evening out. Pair it up with your favorite cotton dress for a casual date or wear it to a summer wedding. This shawl is delicately lacy and sturdy at the same time. The lace dayflower motif forms a field of flowers across the lower edge of the shawl. A brief shower of rain drops is scattered across the top of the shawl, ready to nourish the flowers below.
This pattern is written for both fingering and lace weight yarns. In addition to charts and written instructions, there is a section of guidelines for customizing the size of the shawl. Basic formulas are provided for adding lace repeats and adjusting the short row instructions for different stitch counts. These instructions are guidelines only and will change the yardage requirements.
E-book Details:
This pattern is part of an e-book series, The Agatha Christie Series, Volume 1. This e-book represents a savings over purchasing the patterns separately.
Sizes: This pattern is written for both lace and fingering weight yarn. Where the instructions vary, the lace stitch counts are given first, with the fingering weight stitch counts appearing in brackets ().
After blocking, the shawl will measure approximately 58” across the top and 16” down the spine. Final size may vary depending on needle size and how aggressively you block the shawl.
Skill level: Intermediate. Knitters should be familiar with lace and short rows.
Materials:
- 460 yards/420m - 550 yds/302m of Candy Skein Sweet Fingering/4ply weight yarn (50% Silk, 50% Merino) 438 yards / 100 grams fingering weight yarn or similar OR;
- 438 yards (400m) of lace weight yarn
- US #6 (4.0 mm) knitting needles for fingering weight US #2 (2.75mm) knitting needles for lace weight If using circular needles, use a 24” (30 cm) cord or longer. Depending on how open you like your lace, you could use a needle one size smaller or larger, however this may change the amount of yarn required.
- Needles 1 size larger than used for body for casting off.
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
- Blocking wires and pins are recommended.
Note:
Yardage requirements are based on using a 2.75mm needle (for lace yarn) and a 4mm needle (for fingering weight). Because this pattern is customizable, ensure you buy enough yarn for this project.
About the name:
While designing and knitting this shawl, I was listening to The Moving Finger, by Agatha Christie, set in the town of Lymstock, in which Joanna Burton is one of the characters. Joanna is a pretty, carefree girl who is used to city life (ie, London) who relocates to the tiny town of Lymstock to help her brother recuperate from his war wounds. This shawl reminds me of Joanna Burton: delicate yet strong, interesting yet straight-forward and (by the end of the novel) equally at home in the city or the country.
