During Caribbean Carnival celebrations, performers dance down the streets to calypso music, in brilliant, showy costumes. Jump in the Line socks would fit right in!

Named after the song popularized by Harry Belafonte, these socks were designed with riotously colored variegated yarn in mind. Slipped stitches every other row help to break up pooling while the lace pattern jumps in the line down the leg to a calypso beat. The socks are knit top-down, with a short-row heel and toe, although the pattern converts easily to toe-up (one of my testers did them this way), and the heel and toe are easily switched out with other techniques.

Materials:

• Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock Multi (80% superwash wool, 20% nylon, 435yd/398m per 100g/3.53oz skein); Tomfoolery, 1 skein; or other fingering weight sock yarn
• US 1/2.25mm needles, 5 double point, or size needed to get gauge
• stitch markers (optional)
• tapestry needle or crochet hook for weaving in ends
