Kata hat
This comfy hat is a perfect project for TV or travel knitting. It also knits up very fast, and therefore makes a perfect gift knit.
The hat is knitted from the brim up to the crown in the round, and features a simple 2-st cable design, which can easily be worked without a cable needle. Enjoy!
To fit following head circumferences
53.25 (55.75, 58.5) cm / 21 (22, 23)” (measured around the forehead)
Finished hat measurements (unstretched)
Circumference: 47 (48.75, 51.75) cm / 18.75 (19.5, 20.75)” (measured around the forehead)
Length: 21 (21.75, 22.75) cm / 8.5 (8.75, 9)”

Pattern is designed to be worn with 6.25 (7, 6.75) cm / 2.25 (2.5, 2.25)” of negative ease to allow a snug fit.

Yarn / Yardage
- 2 skeins of Rosa Pomar Brusca yarn, in 5C colourway, 100% fine Portuguese wool, approx. 50 g / 125 m / 136 yds per skein;
- or approx. 140 (150, 170) m / 153 (164, 186) yds of DK weight yarn that gives you gauge. Yardage includes 20% of extra yarn. Please note that size and yardage will be affected when making any adjustments on the hat.
Needles
- 3.25 mm / US 3 circular needle (for the brim),
- 3.75 mm / US 5 circular needle (for the hat body),
or size needed to obtain gauge. - 1 set of 3.75 mm / US 5 DPNs (for the crown shaping)
Notions
- 12 removable stitch markers (use a unique marker to indicate the beginning of the round)
- row counter
- blunt tapestry needle
- scissors
- 1 balloon (not required but would be useful for blocking the hat)
Gauge
25.5 sts and 34.75 rnds = 10 cm / 4” over 2-st Cable pattern. Gauge swatch worked on size 3.75 mm / US 5 needle, in the round. Measurements taken from flattened but unstretched fabric, after blocking.
Required skills
Knit, purl, working in the round, Alternating Long-tail Cast-on for 2x2 ribbing, 2-st Cable pattern without a cable needle, decreasing.
