Pattern errata: Pattern says you can use size 17 straight or circular needles, but it has been brought to my attention that the straight will not work on the change-over from knitting in the round to back and forth due to the number of stitches.
Pattern should read to use size 17 circular needles only, when size 17 is called for in the pattern.

From the moment I saw the first trailer for Catching Fire I fell in love with the Cowl that Katniss is wearing. This is my version of her cowl, inspired by the rustic warmth, charm and strength of hers, but made with a few changes to make it a little more wearable (and warm!) for every day.

The original garment worn by Jennifer Lawrence in the movie is not a knitted garment, but rather made by hand weaving. I have a nod to this in my version with the hand woven rope detail that you will see where the body splits at the shoulder. This pattern includes instructions for making and placing these braided details. You might be tempted to skip these so you can wear your creation faster, but DON’T. You will be glad you didn’t!

The cowl goes farther up than the one shown in the trailer, and ends with the same knitted detail that you see on the body. The side is split to enable you to wear it straight up to block out the cold without it also blocking out your face :-)

The finishing process is just as important to me as the knitting, and I have also included the tips I have for making the finishing of your garment just a lovely as the knitting :-)

GENERAL SKILLS NEEDED: knitting, knitting in the round, picking up and knitting stitches, increasing and decreasing.
I think this pattern is suitable for many skill levels, including an adventurous newby knitter.

BASIC MATERIALS: about 300-350 yards of bulky or super bulky yarn
size 17 and size 13 needles

Pattern includes instructions for making the cowl in 2 sizes S/M and M/L. Precise fit is not important for this garment.

S/M is shown in the photos, and is about 40-42” around at the bottom of the body (where it runs from the shoulder, down the front, under the arm/across the waist and up the back to the same shoulder).

M/L is about 42-44” around this same portion.

This can be worn with either arm through the sling - the front and back are identical. Just by flipping it around, you can have the neck slit and the arm opening reversed :-)

For the seasoned knitter, you can probably make this cowl in just a few days, novice knitters can probably get it done in about a week or so :-)
