For me, exploring languages through Duolingo sparked the inspiration for Kaukana. This bandana cowl takes its name from the Finnish word for “far away,” reflecting the desire to bridge distances with loved ones. The design is a testament to perseverance, learning, and the comfort found in daily rituals.

The cowl begins by working flat, increasing at the edges like a triangular shawl. It is then joined in the round and worked as a short tube to form an easy-to-style cowl. Quick to knit in worsted weight yarn, the project includes guidance for yarn management to maximize a single 100-gram skein. If you’ve knit the companion Kotona mittens, you’ll recognize the stitch pattern as an old friend.

Whether gifting it to someone far away or keeping it close to home, let Kaukana serve as a reminder of enduring relationships and the strength found in small, heartfelt efforts. Each stitch carries the spirit of togetherness, no matter the distance.

Gauge is measured over Chain Rib Stitch, a 1x2 rib pattern using k3B. 27 sts = 6.5 in. (16.5 cm) wide and 40 rows = 4 in. (10.16 cm) tall
