Keeping Betsy Warm
My friend Betsy does not like to be cold. But then who among us does?
She is also my unofficial consultant for all of my designs. I know I can trust her to tell me the truth but I can also count on her to do it kindly. She sits patiently and listens to me attempting to describe my ideas when I’m sure most of the time I am making little or no sense at all! She lets me ask her unanswerable questions and just the act of putting my thoughts into words helps me clarify my thinking. She is my technical and moral support.
She is quick to praise and quick to suggest ideas I might never think of. I always listen carefully and this design is my attempt to turn some of her great ideas into a real garment.
This poncho is made using a growing spiral rib stitch. The pattern starts with k3, p3, and grows to k11, p11. The pattern is worked though the marker meaning when you encounter the marker, just slip it and continue where you left off. The exception to this is when increase rounds are being worked. For those rounds there are stitch counts given before and after marker to help you keep track of where you are in the pattern and when to work the make 1 stitches. The technique used to make new stitches is not important as long as you maintain the k or p stitch as indicated so that the rib stitch will not be interrupted. A simple yo, k2tog lace accent is used around the neck and bottom as an accent. The bottom edge is created using short rows with no attempt to hide the turns.
It can easily be made longer or shorter by adjusting the number of rounds worked between increase rounds.
