The gauge will decide what size the mittens will have. 28 - 29 sts = 10 cm: ladies size, 24 - 25 sts : 10 cm: men’s size. You can use any yarn, only make sure it gives the right gauge for the wanted size.
One ball of each color should be enough for a pair of mittens at any size.
