There are many photos in the pattern to help you along the way with a provisional cast on, 3 needle bind off (optional brim) and other techniques. There is only one small seam after knitting the two colors. The rest of the hat is worked in the round and stitches are picked up for the brim.
Skill Level (1 Easy - 4 Advanced): 3 Confident Knitter
Description: Hat begins with a provisional cast on to created fold of double fabric at bottom band. Single thickness of fabrci for duration of hat, knit in the round with circular needles and then DPNs to finish. Brim is optional and added after main hat is knit.
Needles: size US size 5 (3.75 mm) and US size 7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular or size needed for gauge. US size 7, 4 double pointed needles, US 5 straight for brim, one extra US 5 for three needle bind off for brim, waste yarn and appropriate crochet hook for provisional cast on
Gauge with larger needles, in the round: 5 stitches + 6 rows = 1” in stockinette stitch, unblocked. Samples in photos are unblocked.
Notions: stitch markers, tapestry needle to seam, (2) 1” buttons (Green Sample) or (4) .5” buttons (Grey Sample)
Yarn: any wool or wool blend, worsted weight
Yardage: Main Color (MC) 105 (120, 140) yards
Contrast Color (CC) 20 (25, 30) yards
Total Yardage: 125 (145, 170) yards; 10% added for personal knitting variance.
Yarn for samples: Cascade 220, Each hank: 220 yards, 202 meters,100% wool, 3.5 ounces, 100 grams. Colors, MC #8401 Silver Grey , CC #9540 Multi Grey
Sizes (circumference): 15” (17”, 19”) unstretched. Sample knit in 19” large. Model’s head has a 21” circumference. Hats fit best with 1” – 3” of negative ease (a 15” hat, for example, stretches to fit a 16”-18” head), depending on preference. Approx. 7.5” from bottom of cuff to top of hat, all sizes.
The pattern is written for the 15” hat with 17” and 19” in ( ).
If only one number is listed, it is used for all sizes.
