Beautiful decorative tiles are so human. From Mexico to Morocco and everywhere in between, we see these stunning, sometimes vibrant, sometimes subtle and elegant, motif. This cowl was inspired by the skilled craftspeople and creative tile makers from the past to the present.
The earliest known ceramic tiles are found in Ancient Egypt and one of the first words meaning ceramic is from the Ancient Greek, ‘keramos’.

This is a pattern for a cowl, worked in the round and using the stranded knitting technique.
Stitches are provisionally cast-on before working the ‘tile’ motif, then a folded hem is created and the inner lining of the cowl worked. The edges are then joined with a 3-needle bind off. You may add, optional, embroidery details over the ‘tile’ motif.

2.5mm (us no 1.5) circular needle 24in/10cm
3.0mm (us no 2.5) circular needle 24in/10cm
gauge: 28 sts x 28 rows = 4in/10cm on larger needles and over stranded stockinette
28 sts x 32 rows = 4in/10cm on smaller needles and over single-coloured stockinette (change needles, if needed, to keep stitch gauge throughout)
approximate finished size:
10in/25.5cm (depth) x 21in/53.5cm (circumference)
