This oversize slouch beanie features a deep brim of twisted rib and mock eyelet cable, with a striking checked stranded colour pattern on the crown. A thick and warm hat perfect for winter.

This hat’s namesake Kettlewell is a beautiful little village located in Upper Wharfedale, North Yorkshire of which I have very fond memories of visiting as a child with my grandmother, who lived one village over.

The name Kettlewell is derived from an Anglo Saxon word meaning a bubbling spring or stream, and it is the dark grey brown waters of the River Wharfe splashing over the limestone pebbles of the banks as it runs through the village which inspired this design.

Materials:

• 2 x 100g skeins of West Yorkshire Spinners Bluefaced Leicester DK, one in Un-Dyed Natural Ecru (001) and one in Undyed Natural Brown (003)
• Toft baby alpaca pompom.
• 3.25mm and 4.00mm double pointed or circular needles.
• Stitch markers.

Dimensions:

• Length - 26cm/10” from brim to crown.
• Circumference - 60cm/23.5” on body, 53cm/23” on brim.

Gauge:

• 24 sts and 26 rows over stranded stocking stitch on 4.00mm needles, after blocking.

Construction:

The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. The colour work pattern is incorporated into the crown shaping.

Yarn substitutions:

Any standard weight DK yarn will work for this project, though I do highly recommend WYS Bluefaced Leicester if you can get it, the quality is excellent and it’s very affordably priced. This pattern can be worked in 4-ply for a child’s hat.
