Southwest-inspired stripes in a symmetrically-shaped shawl with a distinctive kite motif in the center back.

Construction:
The shawl is first knit from narrow tip to wide center. Running down the middle of Side 1 is a spine of double decreases centered along a Center Stitch. While the sides decrease in the center, they increase in width along the outside edges until reaching full width.

From here a provisional cast-on is joined to double the stitch count, stitches are worked in the round, from the outside of the circle inward, decreasing to form a kite shape that culminates at the very center.

Side 2 is picked up from the provisionally cast-on stitches, and is worked to form a mirror image of Side 1. Running down the center of Side 2 is a spine of double increases centered along a Center Stitch. While the sides increase in the center, they decrease in width along the outside edges until finishing at a narrow tip.

Finished size:
Triangle shape 84” long, 22” wide (does not include 5” fringe).

Substitute any light sport-weight yarn that works nicely to gauge: 900 total yards. Pattern includes individual yardages for different colors, if creating your own colorway.

Needles:
US 5 (3.75 mm): double-pointed needles and circular needles for center, straight or circular needles for sides.

Notions:
Tapestry needle, crochet hook (any size); stitch markers, fringe twister optional.

Gauge:
21 sts and 42 rows = 4” in garter stitch.
