The 2026 Knitmas in July Knit-Along pattern is easy to memorize and hard to put down - perfect for summer knitting! The pattern uses variations of the Old Shale motif to create a rectangle shawl, knit on the bias with clean i-cord edges.

The shawl was inspired by the rolling waves where the sea meets the shore. In the pattern, the waves show up in the different rhythms of the Old Shale motif. In the kit, the sheen of the Super Silky contrast colors is reminiscent of sunlight glinting off the water as it rolls into the shore.

It’s designed to be:
✔️ Easy to memorize
✔️ Lightweight + portable
✔️ Perfect for summer stitching on the go
✔️ Suitable for most knitters, from adventurous beginner to advanced.

Whether you’re knitting at the beach or backyard, this is your soothing summer knit for July.

Upon purchase, you will receive an introductory PDF. The full pattern will be automatically sent to you on July 28 so you’ll be ready to cast on July 1st!

A tracking worksheet is included to help you keep track of your stitches.

The pattern features links to video tutorials throughout.

GENERAL PROJECT NOTES

~ This generously-sized rectangle shawl is knit flat on the bias, in easy-to-memorize variations of the Old Shale pattern, making it a wonderful take-along summer project!

~ The shawl has i-cord edges that are worked as you go - nothing to add on later. I-cord edges are my favorite way to create a polished finished project and to avoid weaving in ends.

~ You can easily adjust the width and length of this shawl by increasing/decreasing repeats within rows and/or motif repeats.

PATTERN DETAILS:

Finished Measurements: approx. 24”/ 60cm along bias edge, 16”/ 40cm x wide. Length may range from 65-75”/ 162.5-187.5cm depending on blocking.

Needles: US 5/ 3.5mm or size to obtain gauge. Use your preferred needles for working flat.

Gauge: 20 sts and 32 rows = 4”/ 10cm over Old Shale Variation One on the bias. While gauge isn’t critical for this project, it will affect the size of your shawl and the amount of yarn used.

Notions: stitch markers, locking stitch marker or safety pin to mark the RS of your knitting, tapestry needle, blocking supplies.

Yarn: fingering weight in MC, 600yds/ 549m; fingering weight in four colors, 81 yds/ 74m each CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4.
