I needed a bag that was compact and secure to carry around valuable items at public events (like craft shows, retreats and fiber festivals). The fabric had to be dense and not easily pierced by a knitting needle and the shoulder strap needed to be adjustable. The overall look of the bag had to be classic looking enough to complement a somewhat conservative outfit. Finally, the bag needed to be secured closed without Velcro or snaps.
