Knitting Bee: A Shawl
This colorful shawl was knitted by a group of knitters as a demo at a convention. Groups had done this before, in particular using the formula put out by Elizabeth Zimmermann’s PI Shawl (July).
The particular conundrum to solve was how to knit a triangle from the center out as this is an equilateral triangle, after I decided to veer from the more commonly done circle or square from the inside out.
EZ had pointed out much earlier that inc’ing 4 sts per rnd would keep any shape flat when worked from the center out. Most commonly used in the center-out square, one delays the inc’s to every other rnd and has 8 sts to inc in pairs at the 4 corners.
A lightbulb moment struck as I realized that inc’ing pairs of sts at 3 equidistant points on 2 out of 3 rnds would provide the same 4 sts per rnd ratio as 6 sts inc’d on 2 out of 3 rnds = 12 sts per 3 rnds, still at the 4:1 ratio and therefore should result in a flat triangle from the center out.
A very fun experiment.
