KNOCK ON WOOD features a stunning stripe that branches through the centre, the surprisingly easy result of simple bind offs and cast ons. The triangle’s blunt edge is shaped by short rows, and a narrow tail is added at the end to drape warmly around the neck while showcasing the front. A loop at the scarf’s tip reflects the branched centre.

Knock on Wood is the third pattern of my ´Sea Buckthorn´ shawl collection, which is part of the Malabrigo Freelance Pattern Project.

Living and growing up in the North of Germany, I have known the shore plant sea buckthorn with its vivid orange berries and wild-growing bushes since I was a small kid. I’ve always been fascinated by the contrast of sharp and round – the thorns and berries – and that enchantment inspired the five Malabrigo shawls of this collection and their unusual construction. The intense colours of Malabrigo Sock seemed the perfect choice to do this exceptional plant justice.

KNOCK ON WOOD wirkt durch ein zentrales Element, das miteinander verschlungenen Zweigen nachempfunden ist. Seine prägnante Form wird allein durch eine Kombination von Anschlagen und Abketten erreicht.

Verkürzten Reihen formen ein Dreieck mit stumpfer Spitze, an das ein Streifen angestrickt wird. Die Schlaufe am Ende dieses Streifens sowie die Noppenkante nehmen das wellenähnliche weiche Motiv der Zweige noch einmal auf und runden das Design harmonisch ab.

Getragen wird das Tuch, indem der Streifen um den Hals geschlungen wird und die “Zweige” vorne das Dekolleté umschmeicheln.

Knock on Wood ist das dritte Muster meiner “Sanddorn”-Kollektion, die Teil des Malabrigo Freelance Pattern Projects ist.

Aufgewachsen bin ich im Norden von Deutschland und kenne daher den Sanddorn mit seinen leuchtend orangen Beeren und wilden Sträuchern seit meiner Kindheit. Der Kontrast von spitzen Dornen und runden Beeren hat mich schon immer fasziniert und so ist der Gegensatz von spitz und rund das Thema dieser fünf Malabrigo-Tücher mit eher ungewöhnlicher Konstruktion. Die intensiven Farben von Malabrigo kommen dem Vorbild in der Natur sehr nahe.

Im E-Book enthalten sind auch ein paar Extras, die direkt nichts mit dem Stricken zu tun haben. Es gibt einige interessante Fakten zum Sanddorn, ein Rezept für einen wirklich köstlichen Sanddornkuchen (den müsst ihr wirklich unbedingt nachbacken!) und als Höhepunkt das Ergebnis von Naturfärbungen auf Wolle mit den Beeren, Blättern und der Rinde vom Sanddorn.
