Kobberbøg
Rays of the early spring sun peek through the leaves; gentle green and moody reddish-purple. They look like gems, almost translucent. As I walk along the path, the sunshine seems to bring these leaves to life, giving them hundreds of shades; I’m especially in love with the backlit reddish-copper tones and the sparkly dancing shapes of those leaves.
The Kobberbøg scarf / stole is inspired by those trees. Kobber bøg means copper beech in Danish, wonderful and mighty. Kobberbøg combines lace patterns growing from the center out in a crescendo from seed to seedling to majestic crown. With its incredible drape and softness, a Merino-silk yarn enhances the delicacy and elegance of the lace patterning.
For best effect, use a round yarn with good stitch definition. Yarn weights ranging from fingering to DK would be suitable. As for colorways, I would recommend solid, semi-solid, speckled, or gradient (two skeins or two gradient sets) yarns.
Yarn
DyeForYarn Fingering Merino/Silk (Fingering; 75% Merino, 25% Silk; 400 meters / 437 yards per 100 grams); 2 skeins; sample (large size) uses 187 grams in color Brick Dust. Alternative colorways: Taking a bath of roses (bluish rose-purple), Periwinkle on its way to paradise (bluish purple).
Needles
3.5 mm (US size 4) 100 cm / 40 inches circular needle or size to obtain gauge.
Gauge
25 stitches and 33 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, unblocked.
24 stitches and 27 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, blocked.
24.5 stitches and 24.5 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in stitch pattern F – Foliage, blocked.
Note: obtaining the gauge given is not crucial but will affect the finished size and the yardage needed.
Notions
Stitch markers (optional): 2 in color A (edge marker), 2,4 removable markers in color B (repeat marker). Waste yarn (or spare circular needle cable). Shorter cable (60 cm / 24 inches) for the working needle. Tapestry needle. Blocking pins. Blocking wires (optional).
Sizes
Small (scarf), large (stole); easily customizable.
Final measurements
Small size (scarf): Width (w): 19.5 cm / 7.75 inches, length (l): 216.5 cm / 85.25 inches. See schematic.
Large size (stole): Width (w): 36 cm / 14.25 inches, length (l): 216.5 cm / 85.25 inches.
Skill level
Basic stitches, increases, single and double decreases. Relatively easy to memorize stitch patterns. Easy patterning on all rows for the main stitch pattern. Lace patterning on odd rows only. Provisional CO. Elastic BO.
