“Kullane” means in estonia “golden”. It’s an airy and eye-catching triangular bottom-up knitted lace shawl full of tiny lovely nupps. These are a proof of hand knitting. When those are represented, you can be sure that the shawl is made by hands. The total count of nupps is 641 (850).

This shawl is started with knitted cast on from longest edge and knitted to center-up. For cast on you have to take the yarn in double and 1,5-2 mm larger needles than your working needles are.

It’s suitable for intermediate knitters.

Yarn
Any cobweb or lace yarn is good for this shawl. You will need it 700-1000 m.

Sizes:
There are 2 sizes, M and (L), but it’s adaptable bigger or smaller sizes.

Needles and notions:
5-5,5 mm (US 8-9) for cast on
2,75-3,25 mm (US 2-3) for knitting

The sample
Started with 5 mm needles for cast on, and knitted with 2,75 mm needles. I used HEA fine wool (100 g = 1400 m) and I used it 44 g.
The gauge for lace body part is 20 sts and 32 rows for 10 cm (4”).
The measurements of the sample is 150 cm x 80 cm (31,5 “ x 59”).
These nupps are made from 11 strands of yarn.

Stitches used in pattern
s1pwyf - edge stitch (slip 1 purlwise yarn in front)
k - knit
p - purl
yo - yarn over
ssk - slip, slip, knit
k2tog - knit 2 together
sk2p - slip, knit 2 together, pass over
k3tog - knit 3 together
s2kp - slip 2, knit, pass 2 slipped sts over
nupp - knit,yo, knit at same st, yo.. repeat as many times as many sts you want to make for your nupp;
S - slip 1 knitwise, k2 and pass slipped stitch over both sts (decrease)
s2kpN - slip 2 knit ways, slip 1 knit ways, put sts back to left needle and make nupp (knit sts together through the back loop, don’t slip from needle, make yo, knit together again, yo… as many times as many stitches you want to make for your nupp)
sskk2togP - slip, slip, pass over (ssk); knit 2 together (k2tog); pass ssk over k2tog (decrease 4 to one)
