Kume is a seamless open-front cardigan. The bottom up version includes options for being worked at coat or cardigan length, according to your liking.
The top down version includes a series of video tutorials to guide you through the process of knitting your Kume Cardigan.
It also features instructions to be worked in the round (the cardi is then steeked at the end) or flat (in case you’d rather not cut your knitting). It features a cable detail at the side seams and sleeves and a folded neck for extra warmth. The button band is picked up along the edges and up to the collar.
The garment is knit on a whim on large needles in the softest, most special yarn I’ve ever seen- pure joy from Honer och Eir in gorgeous colorways. The fabric is soft and delicate after blocking, worked in the prettiest pink shade.
SiZES

BOTTOM UP VERSION (pink cardigan)

The Kume Cardigan is designed to have approx. 7.5-15 cm (3-6”) of positive ease, meaning it is designed to be approx. 7.5-15 cm (3-6”) larger in circumference than your bust measurement
When in doubt, size down.
Please, note unspun yarn blooms and expands after blocking. It is essential that you compare your gauge to that of a blocked swatch in order to achieve the right results.
YARN
Nutiden by Honer och Eir (100% wool, woolen spun).
The Kume set was originally designed for Nutiden by Höner och Eir (100% unspun wool). This yarn comes in 100 gr plates.
A good yarn alternative is Snefnug by CaMaRose (same gauge). Sample is knit in size 2 with 8 cm (3”) of positive ease.
YARDAGE
Yardage: 520 (550, 580, 620) (630, 660, 680) (720, 730, 760) grams of Nutiden. Yarn is held double throughout.
OR
923 (1000, 1074, 1150) (1225, 1301, 1377) (1425, 1505, 1575) m / 1010 (1093, 1175, 1258) (1339, 1423, 1506) (1539, 1623, 1706) yds) of Heavy Worsted/Aran-weight yarn.
NEEDLES
— 5.5 mm / US9 for body and sleeves (or needle size to obtain gauge)
— 5 mm / US8 mm circular needle, for ribbing (or below gauge-size needle)
GAUGE
16 sts x 18 rounds/rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”in stockinette stitch on larger needle after blocking.
NOTIONS
Blocking tools, darning needle, removable stitch markers, scissors, scrap yarn, and tape measure. Also, buttons (I used 5 but feel free to add as many or as little as you please). Please note that for the bottom-up version I used snap buttons!
For steeking: I originally used the felted steek method for this design in March 2020! I love using the technique when working with unspun yarn and I would totally recommend it for this project. If using the felted steek technique you will need a felting mat or brush and felting needles.
The sample is knit in size 2 with 15 cm (6”) of positive ease.
