Kuvvel
This pattern is published in Mary Jane Mucklestone’s book Fair Isle Weekend. The book is available in 2 versions: in English and in Finnish.
Kuvvel is a cowl with a twist. Knitted circularly in a tube, the cowl is blocked and dried, before giving it a half twist and grafting the ends together, creating a seamless loop. The wee twist gives the cowl a bit of a boost in the snuggle quotient, and makes sure it stays in place around your neck when the winds begin to howl.
Kuvvel is an old Shetland word for a warm covering – maybe knitting it will transport you to bygone days!
