Pattern description from Weekend Knitting: “Made by cutting a strip of fabric out of an ordinary pillowcase, then inserting a strip of knitted lace, this easy project makes almost any bed look welcoming. Treat yourself and your guests to these special cases and/or knit them as a shower, bridal or housewarming gift. To different inserts--a leaf pattern and a love braid--are shown.”

Finished Size:

• Leaf pattern insert 3.5 inches wide
• Love braid insert 4.5 inches wide

Yarn: Jaeger Siena (100% mercerized cotton; 151 yards / 50 grams): 1 ball per pillowcase. Shown in book in #401 white.

Needles:

• One set short straight or 2 double-pointed (dpn) needles size US 3 (3.25 mm).
• Change needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: T-pins, yarn needle, spray or liquid starch, iron, sewer’s marking chalk or pencil, sharp-pointed sewing needle and matching thread, purchased pillowcase(s). Optional: Quilter’s ruler, rotary cutter and board.

Gauge:

• 18 stitches measures 3.5 inches wide, and 20 rows (2 repeats) measures 3.25 inches long in leaf pattern after blocking
• 22 stitches measures 4.25 inches wide and 28 rows (1 repeat) measures 4 inches long in love braid pattern after blocking

Note from Weekend Knitting: “As each lace insert is knitted it will tend to curl up on itself. To make it easier to check row gauge, knit a swatch at least 5” long, then check the gauge over the center stitches.”
