The pattern that inspired this garment was hand written by an elderly Yarn Shop Owner for Anne Stoddard, who shared it with the OnLine Community the Knit List. It was modified by Susan Brooker to include the three sizes, and then by me (Helen Whatley) re remove the lovely lace in the original so that folks who don’t like their baby sweaters to be too “girly” could enjoy the all but immediate gratification of knitting this sweater.

The sweater has been shared all around the internet, and modified by any number of people. It has been suggested that the pattern is “virtually identical” to one that originally appeared in the Spring, 1979, issue of McCall’s Needlwork and Crafts, except that the McCall’s pattern has a hood (this one does not).

Anne Stoddard has also shared patterns for a coordinating bonnet and booties, which were originally printed in the Portland (Maine) Press Herald.
