The loop-d-loop Leaf Cravat that I refined for Interweave Knits, Winter 2002/2003, was a popular project among knit bloggers … The scarf design was jewelry-influenced.  A coiled bracelet with snake heads at the ends gave me the idea for a less venomous form for my knitted "necklace."  For its next incarnation, I thought it would be nice to extend the scarf into a sweater, to place a motif at the neck as if the scarf’s leaf ends were tied there. I repeated the motif at the hem and on one cuff, aiming for a ’50s gamine but curvy silhouette.

The sweater body is constructed in 2 pieces, the lower half is worked from the hem up, then the upper half is worked from the top down (partially in rows, partially in rounds), and then the pieces are grafted together - this allows for the leaf motif to extend from the ribbing of each piece; sleeves are knit from cuff up and grafted to the saddle shoulder.

Pattern Description from Interweave Knits, Summer 2005: “The sweater body of the comfy, oversized pullover is constructed in two pieces, allowing the leaf motif to extend from the ribbing of each piece. Finished Size: 38 (42, 46)“ (96.5 106.5, 117 cm) bust circumference.

Yarn: Filtes King Van Dyck (46% wool, 39% acrylic, 15% alpaca; 117 yd 107 m/100 g): #165 green heather, 5 (6, 7) balls. Yarn distributed by Needful Yarns.

Needles: Size 13 (9 mm): 24” (60-cm) and 32” (80-cm) circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); stitch holders or spare cir needle; tapestry needle, ½“ x 1” (1.3 cm x 2.5 cm) toggle button.

Note: When working in rnds, read the chart from right to left for every rnd (every other rnd is knit even); when working the chart in rows (on upper body and left sleeve), read RS rows from right to left and read WS rows from left to right (all WS rows are purled).
