Lacy Rebozo Scarf
Frida Kahlo wrapped herself in her fashion, taking the traditional Mexican scarf, the Rebozo, and transforming it into a fashion statement, a personal take-along comfort keeper; her personal care partner. The Rebozo is translated from the Spanish Castilian meaning a garment used to cover or protect oneself, almost a symbolic hug or shield, which can be worn wrapped or folded over one’s head and shoulders. It’s thought that wearing a Rebozo enhances the fluidity for a woman, and wearing one, makes a woman feel very feminine. Frida Kahlo thought the Rebozo provided a more graceful appearance which may explain why she adopted this wrap. Today, the Rebozo remains an important part of Mexican national dress, greatly influenced by Frida Kahlo. The Rebozo follows a person from birth, as a baby carrier, and to death, as a shroud.
LACY REBOZO SCARF
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner: projects for first-time knitters using basic knit and purl stitches with minimal shaping.
BIG VICTORY: double decrease, k3tog – knitting 3 stitches together reduces 3 stitches into 1 stitch and is a double decrease technique. If it seems difficult to knit three stitches together, try this: before the decrease is worked, insert the right-hand needle purlwise into the three stitches to stretch them out a bit; then work the k3tog decrease
Knitting Notes and Skills:
• Cast on and bind off
• k means to knit, and p means to purl.
• YO (yarn over) forms an eyelet increase - bring the yarn between the two needles to the front and then over the right-hand needle.
