Lady's Knitted MItt
The Lady’s Knitted Mitt is a lovely and quick fingerless glove based on an 1881 pattern published by Harper’s Bazar. Originally written for a crochet cotton or thread weight yarn, this modernized version uses a fingering (14 wpi) weight of a silk/merino blend.
Knit from the bottom up, beautiful vintage details including eyelets, picots, and a turned hem. The all-over dropped stitch pattern is revealed at the end, and provides a bit of a thrill when you see how the glove transforms from a solid knit to one with an almost ribbed lacey texture. The magical nature of the stitch pattern provides a nearly custom fit for almost any adult/teen size). Those with small hands may want to adjust to a smaller size needle for a better fit.
The pattern includes directions for swatching a 4X4 sample of the dropped stitch pattern and only uses 120 yards or so for both gloves. Optional embroidery stitches decorate the back of the hand. It’s a challenging pattern, but so fun!
