A light, airy shawl in 1-ply wool – a sign of spring, just like the wagtail, which is called Langghalu in Gotlandic, very simple. Graphic, easy lace, as found on a fragment in the collection of Gotland County Handicrafts Association.

Method: this is a straight shawl where the number of sts increased at one side are decreased at the other to produce diagonal ends. The pattern consists of elongated cables, giving the shawl a bubbly structure.

SIZE: ONE SIZE Yarn quantities: 100g (3½oz)

Yarn: Töis from Gotlands Spinneri (1 ply/lace weight); 100g/3½oz/345m/377yds

Finished measurements: approx. 150cm (59in) long, approx. 20cm (7¾in) wide

Needles: 4mm (UK 8, US 6)

Shade: Vitgrå (white grey)

Tension (gauge): 24 sts × 30 rows in garter stitch on 4mm (UK 8, US 6) needles = 10 × 10cm (4 × 4in)

Other: markers, darning needle for fastening off ends, cable needle
Variation: make the shawl longer by adding repeats. Each pattern repeat is 8 sts.
