Difficulty:
Intermediate/Advanced
Techniques used: Elizabeth Stitch, Cluster stitches, Extended single crochet, working in the back bar of a single crochet, center single crochet, crab stitch, some hand-sewing.
Materials Needed:
515, 615 Yards #4 Worsted weight Lily Sugar n Cream in “Jute”
195, 270 Yards #4 Worsted weight Lily Sugar n Cream in “Off-White” for lace section.
3.25mm (D) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
3mm hook for I-cord, scalloped trim, and crab stitch edging on handle
2 1 1/2” Rectangle “buckles” (they are called “buckles”, but they are just rectangles)
(Optional) 1 yd 4.5mm cotton rope for center of handle
(Optional) Small amount of thin twine for “whipping” the ends of the cotton rope
(Optional) Sheet of plastic canvas for reinforcing bottom of bag
Scissors
Yarn needle
Stitch markers
Stitches Used:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
esc = extended single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
BPsc = back post single crochet
rsc = reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
Additional Terms:
Extended single crochet (esc): insert hook into designated stitch, yo, draw up a loop, pull through one, yo pull through one.
2dc cluster: YO, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, YO, draw through 2 loops (1st stitch of cluster made), YO, insert hook into same st, pull up a loop, YO draw through 2 loops (2nd st of cluster made), YO, draw through all loops on hook.
Elizabeth Stitch: insert hook into st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, insert hook into same st, draw up a loop, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook. These stitches should be as tall as a sc stitch.
Back bar of sc: look at the back of the stitch and locate the short bar that runs horizontal. Work all designated stitches for the round into this bar. This is a different location than the back loop!
BLO = back loop only.
st/sts = stitch/stitches
sp/sps = space/spaces
prev = previous
sk = skip
Gauge:
Bag bottom should measure 4” across after round 8.
Measurements:
Medium Bag: 9 1/2” across, by 9” tall without ruffle or handle
Large Bag: 10 1/2” across, by 10 3/4” tall without ruffle or handle
Additional Notes:
-Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch
-Unless otherwise indicated slip stitches are not counted as a stitch and are not worked into.
-Unless otherwise indicated, round begins in same stitch as join.
-Stitch count totals are listed in parentheses ( ) at end of row/round.
