Laura's Mittens
Wave-like lines, a pattern like ripples on water, and the geometric shapes of Italian Renaissance architecture were combined into a design to honour 18th century scientist Laura Bassi. The Archiginnasio of Bologna with its famous arcades was the place where she defended her doctoral theses at the age of 20; “Water” as a natural element of all other bodies was the topic of her first lecture as a professor.
Laura’s Mittens are worked in the round from the cuff to the top of hand with a gusset for the thumb. The colourwork pattern is provided as a chart only.
Yarn and Notions
- DK or light worsted-weight yarn, approximately 125(145) m / 137(159) yards of main colour and 63(82) m / 69(90) yards of contrasting colour for sizes M(L). If you use a hand- or kettle-dyed yarn like Malabrigo Rios, choose solid colours with enough contrast.
- Stitch markers for the end of round and the thumb gusset (optional)
- A length of scrap yarn
- Darning needle
Sizes
The pattern includes different charts for two adult sizes M (green sample) and L (blue and white sample). Schematic and measurements are shown in the pattern photos.
Note: if your hands are not particularly large, but you feel that size M may turn out too narrow, you can work size L at a smaller gauge with lighter yarn and smaller needles.
