Leaf Dishcloths
Thich Nhat Hanh tells us to “wash the dishes to wash the dishes.” He asks us to view this “chore” as an act of mindfulness, to be present.
This is by no means an easy task. I know that when I’m washing the dishes, I’m eager to be done so I can go watch a movie, read a book, join in the conversation—or just be doing anything that isn’t washing the dishes. But Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us that when we are in that state, the state of rushing to get to the next, “better” moment, we aren’t living in this moment at all.
Use these dishcloths as a little reminder of the importance of all life, even the moments or chores that can seem tedious. If you can wash the dishes as if you are “bathing a baby Buddha,” all of life can be miraculous.
