Leeward Hat
The Leeward Hat is a perfect companion to the Leeward Mitts, featuring Lena’s crochet cable technique. Simple stitches - single crochet and its variations (esc, fsc) - form a beautiful cable design, accented by ribbing ridges for added texture.
It’s recommended to start with the mitts first to familiarize yourself with the technique, as the hat introduces a more complex variation of the cables combined with short rows.

MEASUREMENTS & YARDAGE
The Leeward Hat is worked sideways in one piece and joined as-you-go along the side. One size is provided, which comfortably fits many head sizes.
The measurements below refer to the fabric in its unstretched state. The single crochet ribbing is highly stretchy and elastic, comfortably fitting a range of head sizes. The hat is shown in the photos worn over a 21¼″ (54 cm) head circumference.
- Circumference: 18½″ (47 cm)
- Length: 8⅞″ (22.5 cm)
- Yardage: 60 g, 201 yds (184 m)
One skein of Arroyo is sufficient to complete either a hat with a matching pair of short Leeward mitts or two pairs of mitts (one short and one long).

I create new crochet stitches to show a quieter, softer side of crochet: calm, simple, and casual. My patterns may look unusual at first only because the technique is new to you, just like your first chain or single crochet once was. After a little practice, it feels easy and natural.
