Leicester star
The inspiration for this hat came while taking a lunchtime stroll through Leicester city centre. A gentleman walked past wearing a very snazzy felted star shaped hat. After chasing him down to compliment him on it I decided I had to come up with a pattern to knit something similar. This hat has a modular construction and no sewing.
Needles: 3.5 mm / US 4 circular(s) for knitting in the round on a small and medium circumference. 40 cm / 16” length suggested.
It is possible to make this hat using double pointed needles, but it is fiddly.
Yarn: 70 (80, 90, 100)g aran weight yarn, 152 m per 100 g / 166 yds per 3.5 oz.
Sample shown in A Little Bit Sheepish British Bluefaced Leicester aran yarn, 100% wool, 152 m per 100 g in “Juno”.
Notions: 2 stitch markers, waste yarn or spare circular needles in a smaller size than working needles for storing stitches, tapestry needle.
Skills: Judy’s magic cast on, working in the round, knit, increasing stitches, decreasing stitches, weaving in ends.
Gauge: 26 stitches and 48 rows over 10 cm / 4” in stocking stitch. A firm fabric is needed to avoid the points of the star being too floppy. As an alternative, knit an oversized version of the hat at a looser gauge with a pure wool yarn and felt the hat to fit, note this will require more yarn.
Sizing: Pattern gives stitch counts for child (small, medium, large); equivalent to a head circumference of approximately 46 (51, 56, 61) cm / 18 (20, 22, 24)”.
