This cowl reminds me of barreling along down the highway and seeing the blur of color whiz by when you pass a patch of wildflowers on the verge. For striped or bordered projects, you may wish to calculate the specific amount of yardage you need for each color and/or a border. However, I usually use the yardage calculator as a guide and then add half a skein to the total.
