ISSUE 1: Missing stitch on row 1.
In the row repeat there is a “k1, yo, p1” sequence. If done incorrectly, you will lose the yarn over. Work the stitches this way:
First, make the “k1”. Now make the “yo” by bringing the yarn between the needles and up over to the back. With the yarn is positioned so, it’s ready for a knit stitch next, but you need to make a purl stitch next. So, bring the yarn between the needles to the front. Then make the “p1”. Bring the yarn to the back, ready for “ssk”.
ISSUE 2: Changing stitch counts.
On all rows except 3 and 4 of the Elm Leaf Pattern (written or charted), the stitch count remains at 35. On row 3, this is decreased to 33, or 1 stitch decreased per row repeat. On row 5, this is increased back to 35, or 1 stitch increased per row repeat. If you keep getting the same errors, try the following:
1: Count your stitches at the end of rows 3 and 4 (33 stitches), and row 5 (35 stitches).
2: Follow my definitions for the techniques “k2tog”, “ssk”, and “s2kpo” (centered double decrease).
3: Maybe you’re losing your place in the directions? Then place 4 stitch markers: after the first 2 edge stitches, after the next 15 stitches (pattern repeat 1), after the next 15 stitches (pattern repeat 2), and after the following stitch. It will look like the string below.

- Updated knitting level to Advanced Beginner.
- Updated time to knit to less than 1 day.
- Updated chart: purl symbol.
- Updated 3-to-1 decrease from sk2po to s2kpo.
- Updated written pattern to include stitch counts. On rows 3 and 4, 2 sts are decreased (1 st per row repeat), so the stitch count is 33. On row 5, 2 sts are increased (1 st per row repeat), so the stitch count is back to 35. On the charted pattern, the grey boxes indicate “no stitch” meaning 1 less stitch per row repeat.
