Life and Death Brigade Fingerless Mitts
While searching for her next article subject for The Yale Daily News, Rory stumbles across a gorilla-masked woman proclaiming, “In omnia paratus,” (Latin for “prepared in all things”), which leads her down the rabbit hole searching for the Life and Death Brigade, a secret society at Yale. While Although not much is known or written about the society, they have a reputation for pulling dangerous and elaborate stunts. Finding out that Logan Huntzberger’s grandfather was a member, she confronts him. However, Logan won’t give her information, and instead agrees to let her experience it if she agrees toaccepts “unknown conditions.” Finding She finds herself gently kidnapped and taken to the 108th assembly deep in the woods, styled as a 1930’s safari, where no one will tell her anything due to her lack of period clothing, and lack of participation in their game of speaking without using the letter “e.” After she is given a ball gown and participates in the annual stunt—this year it’s jumping off a 7seven-story story-high scaffold with an umbrella—she is embraced by the secret group. While viewers never learn if Rory becomes an official member, she is left with a bottle of champagne, a gorilla mask, her confiscated camera, and quite a story when she is returned home.
You won’t have to pull a crazy stunt to knit up these fingerless mitts! Worked in the round starting from the bottom cuff edge, they feature elegant top hats and bowtiebow ties are worked in stranded colorwork on the palm side, while the front of the mitts features highlights the Life and Death Brigade’s motto, “In omnia paratus,” superimposed on the umbrella, from evoking Rory’s time participating in their games. Increases establish the afterthought polka- dot thumb, with the stitches put on waste yarn to be worked after the body of the mitt is completed.
